This was my first detector, given as an Xmas gift from my fabulous girlfriend, and I am glad she gave me this one because I would have outgrown a cheaper model pretty quickly. It has a pretty good range of features and can take a beating in the elements-- I've had this on the beach and in the woods. Dismantles quickly and fits into a messenger bag for biking to the search area.

The detector sends you audio beeps based on the metallic range it is sensing in your target object. There are 3 core "beep" sounds; different types of objects cause different series of beeps to occur. The trick is to learn to understand what the detector is "telling" you when it passes over an object. I watched the accompanying video and followed the instructions and was glad I did. It encourages hours and hours of practice, and seriously, there is no way around it. One summer on the beach with it eventually taught me to recognize what was buried before I even dug it up, 70% of the time. This is key to good detecting, since you can bypass all the bottle caps and rusted nails and focus on the good stuff.

So far I've found about $50 in plain old clad coins, some wheats, a couple older coins (1909 Indian cent, 1945 Mercury dime) and some cool relics (an old flour scoop, a colonial iron hatchet blade, a neat silver cigarette lighter. I'm thinking about going for a better machine soon, but this is a great beginner-to-intermediate detector. Get yourself a set of 1/8" noise-canceling headphones, a trowel and a mesh sifter-scoop too.

The Garrett Ace250 is an all around good detector. It has alot of features of a high end machine for an affordable price. It is real eazy to use even for the beginner. It pinpoints the target really well even in trashy areas. It has good depth and its target id is pretty accurate. I would definately recommend this machine to anyone who is thinking about buying a metal detector.
