Detecting With New Friends

I’ve been metal detecting since I was 13 years old, but running a metal detecting shop has increased my knowledge of detecting and treasure finds even more. Sharing that knowledge with others is what the hobby is all about.

In fact, three customers of MetalDetectors.com are now all detecting together as a group and having a great time! I even went ... Read More

Weekend Treasure Hunt

This past weekend I went back to the old spot where I found my 1819 large cent from the previous Saturday. Again, small wooded area across from an old cemetery. I don't like getting to close to the cemetery because people might think you’re digging 6 feet for a body (LOL!).

The area that I have been metal detecting at has been hit pretty hard. So, I went into the thick stuff where I could barely fit the coil between fresh new pine ... Read More

Gold Pocket Watch and Chain Found on Farm

Yesterday was a beautiful summer day in New England. No rain or humidity, just a cool breeze, making for a perfect day for metal detecting. I went detecting with four friends in Southern, MA on a one-hundred acre farm field. With a field so large, everyone seemed to have their own ideas of where the good finds might be located. Most detectorists will start at the top of the hill where you see one or two isolated trees. After ... Read More

Successful Labor Day Treasure Hunt

It was nice having a day off this Labor Day Holiday. I have been in a slump and have not found anything exciting metal detecting in the past three weeks. I made plans to go detecting with my buddy Glenn, who happened to find some silver during our day out in the field.

While driving looking for a spot, I noticed a farm field behind a row of 1800’s homes that are located on the South Shore of Massachusetts. I was trying ... Read More

Locations are Never Truly Hunted Out

Shawn Burke started off as a customer of mine and has become a great friend to me. I frequently go metal detecting in South East Massachusetts with a group of guys. One of the best things about this is that we all communicate on different locations to go treasure hunting. We all have been pounding a small farm field that was converted into a park. The first silver watch I ever found was ... Read More

Welcome Treasure Hunters

I remember my first time watching a man metal detecting at a local high school, when I was just ten years old. I still remember being under the tree, watching him search through a pile of dirt looking for something. I then saw two shining silver dimes which turned out to be mercury dimes. I remember saying to myself those dimes look different. A couple of years later I was starting to collect coins. By the age of thirteen I bought my first ... Read More

New England Produces Colonial Coppers & More

I took a road trip and headed up to North East Massachusetts to visit my good friend Bernie, who is a customer I met when he came into the shop looking for a metal detector. Bernie received permission to have us hunt on an old farmstead that has history from the revolutionary period. So, with a good potential hunting site in mind he packed up his Read More

Quarter Eagle 1852 Liberty Head

My customers keep bringing in these amazing finds each week to the store. The type of coin that turns everyone’s head is a gold one. My pal Glenn went out detecting in an apple orchard farm from the early 1800’s in Central Massachusetts. During that hunt, he hit his bucket list coin! Now if you remember, I have done two other blogs on Glen and said that would be enough. But again, I was wrong; this gold coin is an ... Read More

Charles 2nd & Catherine's 1662 Brass Counter

I went out detecting this past weekend with King George of NE. As we were pondering on where to go detecting, we came to a mutual agreement. Let’s go to an area that has produced before and one that we know has some history to it.This area George found his Spanish cob and we both found a lot of Colonial Coppers in this one area on the South Shore of Mass. After detecting for 4 hours, George pulled a nice large cent, 2 buffalo nickels ... Read More

There Was A Crooked Man: Love Token Coin

My pal King George of NE came by the shop with one of his coins, which has an intriguing story behind it. The coin is a 1708 Queen Ann Silver six pence. It was found in Eastern Massachusetts, which is rare. It is a common find in England. George believes it is a crooked man’s love token.

The crooked man’s poem goes something like this:

“There was a crooked man and he walked a crooked mile. He found a crooked ... Read More

Nokta Impact Finds Old Deep Silver!

I will try to make this brief. Detectorists have been asking, “What’s up with your BLOGS?” I know it has been a long time. I had an L-4 L-5 lumbar back fusion surgery, which took me out of the metal detecting game for a couple of months. As you can imagine, my back was hurting me very bad and I knew the recovery would be awhile, but I was determined to get back out there. I had great ... Read More

Perseverance Pays Off: 1652 Pine Tree Coin

Denise is a great detectorist to go into the fields to hunt with. She’s very enjoyable, low key and loves the hobby! I first met Denise in the shop when she bought her Minelab CTX 3030. George and Denise stopped by the shop during the middle of the week and asked if I would like to join them for a hunt. Unfortunately, I said I have to work and was very busy. They stated, “Are you sure? We did some ... Read More
